A low leather sofa, cream swivel chairs, a slim console with a lamp on it — and that lamp matters more than it looks, because without it the far corner is just a corner. Each slab is its own board. Come and pick one off the floor.

Bob and Belle Cooper started Uttermost in Rocky Mount, Virginia, in 1975. It is still family-owned and family-run — their son Mac Cooper is president now — and the company has stayed put, in the same town in the foothills west of Roanoke, where its plant and distribution center sit in a bowl of wooded hills.
They are a different kind of name on this floor, and it is worth being straight about how. Uttermost does not build hardwood furniture to order in a family shop the way most of the makers here do. They design in Virginia and produce through partner factories in North America, Europe and Asia, and they sell only through retailers — never direct to the public. What they are is a design house that has spent fifty years on the category everyone else treats as an afterthought.
That category is the finish of a room. Table lamps, floor lamps, mirrors, wall pieces, accent tables, benches and the odd accessory that makes a console look considered rather than merely occupied. A dining table can be perfect and the room still feel unresolved because there is nothing on the wall and nowhere the light lands properly. That is the gap Uttermost fills.
Their designers work a season ahead and the range turns over constantly, which is exactly the opposite rhythm to a hardwood shop building the same trestle table its founder built. Both things are useful. One gives you the piece your grandchildren argue over; the other gives you the lamp that makes it look right tonight.
