A Walnut Slab and Six White Chairs

Arista began in a small barn on Ray Yoder’s family farm near Sugarcreek, Ohio, with a few tools and one project at a time. That is not an origin story dressed up for a website. It is what the first years actually looked like.

Ray’s sons joined the work and learned it the way it is usually learned here: at the bench, slowly, from someone who will not let a joint go. The shop outgrew the barn and took on skilled local craftspeople, but it stayed in the same country, and the standard stayed the one Ray set.

For a long time they worked only in reclaimed oak, salvaged out of historic barns that could no longer be saved. Boards that have spent a century holding up a roof through Ohio winters do not look like new lumber, and nobody here wanted them to. But rustic was never the goal on its own. The character was what the wood brought; the furniture underneath it still had to be right.

The reclaimed work remains part of what they do, though the shop builds in new hardwood as well now and took a broader name to say so. Arista is Greek for the best of something. It is a bold thing to put on the side of a building, and the pieces we bring south are the argument for it.
